For facilities that depend on backup generation or continuous fuel supply, catching problems early is the difference between a maintenance call and an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are four warning signs that your fuel storage system needs attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Water in fuel samples<\/strong><br>Water intrusion is one of the most common and damaging conditions in a fuel storage system. Water promotes corrosion inside the tank, accelerates microbial growth, and degrades fuel quality over time. Left unchecked, it can work its way through the entire fuel delivery system and cause serious damage to pumps, filters, and combustion equipment. Regular fuel sampling is the fastest way to catch it early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leaks or seepage<\/strong><br>Wet spots, stains, or residue around fittings, tank bases, or seams are never something to ignore. These are signs of a failing seal, a corroding fitting, or structural degradation of the tank itself. Even a slow seep can become a compliance issue, an environmental liability, or a safety hazard if left unaddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tank sediment<\/strong><br>Sediment accumulates at the bottom of fuel tanks over time through normal settling, rust, and microbial byproducts. As it builds up, it can restrict fuel flow, damage pumps, clog filters, and introduce contaminants throughout the delivery system. Periodic tank cleaning and proper filtration are the best defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Unexplained efficiency losses<\/strong><br>If your system is consuming more fuel than usual or combustion performance has declined without an obvious mechanical cause, fuel quality is often the culprit. Degraded fuel burns less efficiently, driving up operating costs and putting additional stress on combustion equipment. Tracking fuel consumption over time makes these trends easier to spot before they become expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Routine inspections, proper filtration, and proactive maintenance are not optional for facilities that depend on fuel oil systems to perform when it matters most.
