Improve Safety with Preferred Engineering’s Strongbacks

Personnel safety in nuclear power plants is always on our minds at Preferred Engineering, especially for maintenance and handling of large reactor components. To support operational safety and efficiency during BWR reactor maintenance, we offer robust strongback solutions designed to reduce radiation exposure and ease component handling.

The Cattlechute Strongback provides high-strength support designed with either an integral hook box or lift lugs for station sling use. It uses pneumatic cylinders to remotely operate the lift pins. This solution increases ALARA benefits, reduces downtime, and improves safety thanks to features like floor elevation connected rigging, off-critical path preparation, and reduced installment and removal time. This device allows for precise positioning with minimal operator handling to safely manage cattlechute components in constrained spaces.

Similarly, the Dryer/Separator Strongback is tailored for the efficient and secure positioning of the dryer/separator components, reducing manual intervention and associated radiation exposure. This tool utilizes pneumatic cylinders to operate both the integral Hookbox pins and the end lug pins. Control can be grouped or individual based on station preference.

The LPRM Strongback provides essential support for Local Power Range Monitor (LPRM) tasks, reducing exposure by streamlining component handling. It is designed to allow for a customized lift point, facilitating ‘bottom heavy’ rigging. The modular three-piece design is made for ease of decontamination and can be disassembled for ease of handling/storage.

Finally, the Shield Block Remote Lifting Strongback sets the standard in safety. It eliminates the manual rigging of the lower blocks by RXS personnel who require the use of ladders and fall protection. Its floating pin design accommodates various alignments and eliminates the problems associated with precise pin/cylinder alignment to prevent pin binding during engagement, thus reducing error and setup time for critical shield block handling.

These Preferred Engineering strongback solutions are engineered from high-grade materials to withstand demanding BWR environments. Each strongback is engineered and fabricated to meet NUREG 0612 and ANSI N14.6 requirements. They provide essential support to engineers and operators who face intense safety and accuracy requirements in nuclear maintenance. These tools streamline operations, cut down radiation exposure, and boost control, exemplifying Preferred Engineering’s commitment to advancing both nuclear safety and operational reliability.
