Temporary Reactor Pressure Vessel Cover
Fast and reliable Reactor Pressure Vessel Isolation
Safety and efficiency are the two most important factors in every nuclear outage. Reducing outage duration, minimizing radiation exposure, and protecting equipment from damage are absolutely key. These responsibilities require tools that are carefully designed and engineered.
That’s what Preferred Engineering delivers with the Temporary Reactor Pressure Vessel Cover (TRPVC). It is a purpose-built engineering solution designed to simplify and secure RPV isolation during Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) outages.
Once the RPV head is removed and the vessel de-fueled, the TRPVC provides a rapid and reliable seal over the open vessel, allowing drain down below the TRPVC for inspection or maintenance activities. This enables critical path activities to be performed in parallel rather than sequentially.
Preferred Engineering’s TRPVC installs with a single crane pick, typically in less than an hour. The design minimizes exposure, reduces crew fatigue, and speeds up critical path operations.
The cover is constructed from polished stainless steel, not only resisting corrosion but also offering superior decontamination properties. Once in place, the TRPVC allows immediate verification of the vessel flange seal through an integral seal challenge port. Its 3-inch vent and backfill lines facilitate rapid draining and refilling.
Additionally, the TRPVC can be segmented for safe transport through narrow containment access hatches. It can also be delivered with support posts that allow internal lift rigs to be stored directly on the TRPVC during the outage.
